Puppy Chow

Image result for puppy chow advertisement
Deconstruction:
  • Medium: Digital
  • Materials: 1s & 0s and pixels
  • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is puppy chow.
  • Aesthetic Qualities: This image neither sublime nor beautiful.
  • Gesture: The dogs look like they're really enjoying the food.
  • Formal Elements: The image is kinda bland, with a mustard yellow all over, which makes the yellow dog blend in. The text is brown, which doesn't pop out either. It looks like an advertisement designed with Dwight Shute's clothes in mind. There is some negative space in the right corner. The picture has an old-time feel to it.
  • Lighting: The yellow looks darker at the top left corner, and gets lighter as it spreads out.
  • Dimension: The writing above the puppy chow food is way way way too small. The dogs should honestly be bigger.
  • Location: This image was found on the internet, but could be used in a pet store.
  • Display: This image is kinda cute, but only once you read the text at the top. It is not aesthetically pleasing.
    Response:
The only cute part about this ad is the puppies. But I suppose that's enough to make me like it, because overall I still think it's cute, although after breaking it down in the deconstruction, I realize I hate every other part of it.

    Deconstruction:
    • Medium: Digital
    • Materials: 1s & 0s and pixels
    • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is Subaru cars.
    • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is beautiful, especially because of the pretty scene in the back.
    • Composition: The focal point of this image is the blue car.
    • Gesture: No gestures.
    • Formal Elements: There's a lot of contrast between the snow and the sky. The tracks in the snow lead you from the car to the text above.
    • Lighting: The image is bright, with a small shadow behind the car.
    • Dimension: The text describing the Subaru is pretty small, but I assume that's because only people that liked the look of the car would find that usual. No one buys are car that they think is ugly.
    • Location: This image was found on the internet, but could probably also be used as a poster.
    • Display: There's some things going on in this image but it's still straight to the point.
      Response:
Being that it's starting to snow in Oneonta, the ad made me want to buy a Subaru to combat the snow this winter. The "grip back" was a good idea, because it makes me want to conquer the snow instead of struggling through it in my little car.

      Deconstruction:
      • Medium: Digital
      • Materials: 1s & 0s and pixels
      • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is the Apple Computer.
      • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is definitely on the sublime side.
      • Composition: The focal point of this image is the blue computer.
      • Gesture: No gestures involved.
      • Formal Elements: There is an extreme amount of negative space in this image. The font of the text is extremely generic, which plays into the simplicity of the image.
      • Lighting: The image is extremely light, because the majority is like a pure white, which allows the computer to pop out.
      • Dimension: Everything is proportional within the picture, except the Think Different at the bottom is pretty small, but is still affective because there is nothing surrounding it, and it pops out.
      • Location: This image was found on the internet, but may have been used in magazines, in stores, etc.
      • Display: This image is almost too simple, but works.
        Response:
I like this. The unapologetic-ness of the text and simplicity of the ad make it extremely effective without doing much at all.

        Deconstruction:
        • Medium: Digital
        • Materials: 1s & 0s and pixels

        • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is beautiful, because pizza.
        • Composition: The focal point of this image is the pizza slice being taken.
        • Gesture: The person grabbing the pizza must be doing it very slowly, because you can see the gooey cheese hanging off the slice.
        • Formal Elements: There is a lot of yellow and red in the picture, which reminds you of pizza. The pizza looks very textured, with lots of different toppings.
        • Lighting: The image looks like its under a warm lighting, which gives the illusion that it's cooking in an oven.
        • Dimension: The "Hungry?" and phone number are written in large letters, presumably so that people know to call them.
        • Location: This image was found on the internet
        • Display: This image does not have too much going on, although the Hand-Tossed logo seems very out of place.
          Response:
Domino's makes this pizza look so good, even though we all know Domino's has horrible pizza. If I didn't know better, I would definitely call 111-Domino the next time that I need pizza.

          • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is Burnett's alcohol.
          • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is kinda pretty, but it really just looks like a party.
          • Gesture: Everything looks like a mess, which is most definitely the case whenever Burnett's is involved.
          • Formal Elements: All the different colors make the image look wild. The Burnett's logo in the middle is dark in comparison to everything else.
          • Lighting: The entire image is super bright and popping.
          • Dimension: The more fun with every flavor is small in comparison to everything else, but the pink color on a mostly white background helps it stick out.
          • Location: This image was found on the internet, and probably is mostly used there and in liquor stores.
          • Display: This image is has a lot going on, but it's very easy to interpret.
            Response:
This image reminds me of freshmen year. It's really cool because if there's really "more fun with every flavor," then apparently you can buy fun for $8.99. If I didn't know better, I'd definitely want to buy Burnett's the next time I wanted to go out.

            • Gesture: The two men look like they're cheering to something.
            • Formal Elements: The image looks like it's painted, which is really cool. The bright colors for the Blue Moon sign and central beer make them pop.
            • Lighting: The image is pretty light, with the central beer and blue moon sign especially bright.
            • Dimension: The central beer is literally bigger than both of the mens' heads.
            • Location: This image was found on the internet, but may be used in bars or on posters.
            • Display: This image is very simple.
              Response:
This image is probably intended at older men, who like to drink beers with their friends, but it makes me want to have a beer with my friends.

              • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is more on the beautiful side than sublime.
              • Composition: The focal point of this image is the superman condoms.
              • Gesture: Superman's shadow makes it look like he's watching you, and makes you want to grab a condom before getting it on.
              • Formal Elements: The Superman colors make condoms look like a fun thing to use. There's so much negative space in the upper and lower third of the image.
              • Lighting: The image is pretty light, but Superman's shadow covers the center of the image.
              • Dimension: The condoms are huge in proportion to the text. the "protecting metrapolis" is smaller than "one lois at a time".
              • Location: This image was found on the internet, and probably is mostly used there.
              • Display: This image is very simple and straight to the point.
                Response:
This condom ad is really cool! I liked the use of the superman shadow to make it look like he's watching you.

                • Composition: The focal point of this image is the cleat.
                • Gesture: The cleat looks very explosive and aggressive, tearing up the field.
                • Formal Elements: The text is slanted, which makes it look like its being dragged by the cleat. The lighting under the heel creates a lot of negative space in the upper half of the image.
                • Lighting: The lighting on the cleat draws your eyes to the cleat, and then downward to the nike symbol and cleat name.
                • Dimension: The cleat is obviously huge in proportion to everything else.
                • Location: This image was found on the internet, but may be used in magazines, sports stores, etc.
                • Display: This image is very simple and straight to the point.
                  Response:
This image makes me want to buy these cleats because I want explosive speed. Also, the sunset in the background and the tearing up of the field makes it look like this is an intense game that I want to be a part of.

                  • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is Uber
                  • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is on the beautiful side because wow look at that beautiful boy stepping out of that beautiful car.
                  • Gesture: The man's posture makes him look like he's about to step onto the red carpet and impress some people. The man opening the door for him looks like he respects the guy in the front.
                  • Formal Elements: The black and white greyscale makes the image look like its in a black and white James Bond type movie. The white text on the black and white image looks classy.
                  • Lighting: The image is rather light, although the car and uber driver are pretty dark, which makes you focus on the hot guy.
                  • Dimension: The man in the middle stands out the most because he is front and center and larger than everything else. The car is in the background, which makes uber seem like it's all about the style, not just getting you from point A to point B.
                  • Location: This image was found on the internet
                  • Display: You can't tell this is an uber ad immediately, but the picture is attractive, so you'll find out after looking at it for a few seconds.

                    • Aesthetic Qualities: This image neither sublime nor beautiful, but I guess it's more on the sublime side because it's gross.
                    • Composition: The focal point of this image is the crusty blade.
                    • Gesture: The blade is all used up and if it were a human, it'd resemble me during finals week.
                    • Formal Elements: The ad looks like it belongs in an Archer show, which probably appeals to the young, 20-something year olds that can only afford $1 razors, and milk that sorry last blade.
                    • Lighting: The image is pretty light. Even the wood in the back is a light brown.
                    • Dimension: The blade is pretty small in comparison to the text above it, and the Company's info is relatively small compared to everything else.
                    • Location: This image was found on the internet, and probably is mostly used there.
                    • Display: This image is really funny and definitely gets at its target audience.
                      Response:
This image resonated with me, because I definitely know that I mostly use cheap razors because I can't afford to buy the good stuff, and usually hold onto them until my mom throws them out.

                      • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is Kamala Harris.
                      • Aesthetic Qualities: This image neither sublime nor beautiful.
                      • Gesture: Warren's pose makes her look serious, and like she's given a lot of thought before endorsing Harris.
                      • Formal Elements: The background looks slightly textured, like it was painted. The red white and blue make the image feel patriotic, but the red and blue look like a retro red and blue.
                      • Lighting: The image is pretty light, but darker on the left side, which pushes the viewer to the middle, and then farther to Warren.
                      • Dimension: The Harris symbol in the corner is so small and light that it doesn't even look like it's there. Warren takes up a huge portion of the image, even though she isn't even mentioned by name.
                      • Location: This image was found on the internet, and probably is mostly used there, although may also be an image of a clip used on tv.
                      • Display: This image is very simple and straight to the point.
                        Response:
I thought this image was very interesting, because it doesn't mention Warren by name, but assumes that viewers know who she is, and respects her endorsement of Harris. It makes you think, "If Liz likes her, I do too".

                        • Aesthetic Qualities: This image tries to be sublime, but it's mostly ugly.
                        • Gesture: Ryan's expression is stressed, and makes him look very unlikeable.
                        • Formal Elements: The black and white make Ryan look like a criminal. The Orange/Red and yellow text also allude to the idea that he should be in jail. Putting Capitol Hill way in the background portrays the idea that he doesn't belong there.
                        • Lighting: The image is pretty dark, which allows words like "STOP" to pop out.
                        • Dimension: STOP is disproportionately larger than the rest of the text and images, which makes you really want to stop Paul Ryan.
                        • Location: This image was found on the internet, and probably is mostly used there, and on nonprofit websites that are attempting to raise money to stop Ryan.
                        • Display: This image is very simple and straight to the point.
                          Response:
This image makes even me want to stop Paul Ryan, and I like him! The colors make the issue look extremely urgent, and does a good job of portraying Paul Ryan as a threat to people in the USA.

                          • Formal Elements: The red, white, and blue stripes in the background give the image a patriotic feel. The way the stripes are sorta curved makes the background look like a flag waving in the wind.
                          • Lighting: The image is pretty light, with some darker shadows around the corners.
                          • Dimension: The Bernie symbol in the corner is pretty small, probably because people know what he looks like, so it's not that important. The text on the top is pretty big compared to everything else, which is to draw attention to it, especially since it's funny.
                          • Location: This image was found on the internet, and probably is mostly used there.
                          • Display: This image is very simple and straight to the point.

                            • Composition: The focal point of this image is Vermin and the goofy boot on his head.
                            • Gesture: Vermin looks like he is looking off into the distance, with his eyes focused on something important.
                            • Formal Elements: The use of red, white, and blue makes the ad seem very presidential. The coat looks textured to show that Vermin has wealth and can afford a nice fur coat. The image looks retro.
                            • Lighting: The image is light with some dark blues and black to provide contrast.
                            • Dimension: The image is a decent size, like it could fit in a magazine or on a billboard.
                            • Location: This image is only found on the internet.
                            • Display: This image looks like it has a lot going on, since Vermin's face looks black and white but everything else is in color and he has a boot on his head.
                              Response:
This image reenforces that Vermin is an absolute joke of a human, and presidential candidate. If people didn't know who he was before viewing this image, they wouldn't know that this wasn't a joke of an ad.

                              • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is neither sublime nor beautiful.
                              • Composition: The focal point of this image is the center where it says "her emails"
                              • Gesture: Anthony Weiner is looking very guilty, his face looks stressed. Hillary is looking down at her phone with sunglasses on, looking like she's trying to stay low and not be noticed.
                              • Formal Elements: The lighting on this image forces the eyes to the middle. The dark colors of everything, with Weiner's name in red, whose very obviously a infamous figure, associates Hillary Clinton with guilt.
                              • Lighting: The image is very dark, with lighting around the center where the text is.
                              • Dimension: It looks like a billboard sized image, or like something that would be on tv.
                              • Location: Weiner is at a press conference, and Hillary is on the move.
                              • Display: This image is very simple and straight to the point.
                                Response:
In order to understand this image, one has to understand the back story to Anthony Weiner, and what else someone may find on his laptop. Moreover, Weiner's private info was leaked before, so the ad is meant to make people fear that Hillary's private info as Sec of State could get leaked and risk national security.

                                • Materials: 1s & 0s and pixels
                                • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is the woman, and reproductive rights.
                                • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is attempting to be sublime, with the black and white and greyscale picture of the woman, and the red background behind the text.
                                • Composition: The focal point of this image is the woman's chest, where the text starts.
                                • Gesture: The woman looks like she's ready to fight, because she's leaning forward and has a serious look on her face. However, her arms are crossed, which shows that she's guarding herself.
                                • Formal Elements: The red and white text is usually used for images and ads that call out the government for being too controlling. The darkness around the woman's shoulder makes her face look like its farther out.
                                • Lighting: The image has a lot of contrasting light. Parts of it, such as the woman's face and right arm, are bright, with spots in the background being rather dark.
                                • Dimension: It looks like a poster sized image.
                                • Location: This could definitely be used as a poster, a picket sign, or used in a magazine.
                                • Display: This image is pretty straightforward.
                                  Response:
This image makes women want to fight, and defend themselves. My initial response was like, "but it IS my body, and i AM gonna do what I want with it"!! But the image hits at a large issue that is the government's overstep in woman's rights and the image makes all women want to fight that.

                                  • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is the premature baby.
                                  • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is attempting to be sublime, because it's dealing with a premature, aborted baby.
                                  • Composition: The focal point of this image is the baby in the adults hand.
                                  • Gesture: The baby looks helpless and distressed, and the hand that is holding it makes it seem like the child is being handed off to you to take care of.
                                  • Formal Elements: This image uses greyscale with white text. There is a lot of texture within the baby and the hand, which makes it look very realistic.
                                  • Lighting: The image is pretty light. The border starts out dark, and then it seems to get lighter as you make your way to the center.
                                  • Dimension: The image is like a square, the baby is super tiny in a large hand. A lot of the text is really small, but the larger text pulls you in to make you want to read the ad in its entirety.
                                  • Location: This image could be placed in a number of locations; magazines, posters, etc.
                                  • Display: This image has a lot going on, but the baby and large texts encourages the viewer to take the time to digest everything.
                                  Response:
This image makes you really sad because you're looking at a tiny helpless baby. It makes you feel horrible that this happens, and doesn't give any insight into why an abortion might be needed (obviously).

                                  • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is the bowl of skittles, and the text relates the bowl of skittles to the Syrian refugee crisis.
                                  • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is attempting to be neither beautiful, nor sublime. It's just supposed to scare you via the text.
                                  • Composition: The focal point of this image is the bowl of skittles.
                                  • Gesture: There is no human gesture in this image.
                                  • Formal Elements: There is a lot going on in this picture. The text is white. The question is behind the red background, and the response is behind the blue background. The combination of red, white, and blue, gives the image a sort of patriotic feel. The colors of the skittles (yellow, orange, green) are colors that are not "American", which plays into the idea that they are not us.
                                  • Lighting: The image is bright, and the red draws your eyes to the text. I'm very confused to how the bowl does not have a shadow behind it.
                                  • Dimension: The dimension looks pretty small.
                                  • Location: This image was first displayed on Twitter, but is now all over the internet.
                                  • Display: This image has a lot going on because there is a lot of text and a bowl of skittles.
                                    Response:
This image takes a while to process because of how much that is going on. If you're a compassionate, genuine human, you get really angry at Trump Jr's oversimplification of the Syrian Refugee Crisis. And then you realize that the image is not even accurate at all, because, proportionately, waaaaaay less than 3 skittles out of the entire bowl should be considered dangerous.

                                    • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is Donald Trump. It's taking one of his quotes from the last (?) presidential debates.
                                    • Aesthetic Qualities: This image is attempting to be sublime, because obviously anything with his face on it cannot be beautiful (kidding, kinda). But seriously, the black and white colors and light grey behind trump, along with the red border and reddened women is a dead giveaway that it's hoping to be sublime (and kinda scary).
                                    • Composition: The focal point of this image is Trump, which is off to the left side of the picture.
                                    • Gesture: Trump looks aggressive, pointing at you, hunched forward, like he's about to spring forward.
                                    • Formal Elements: This text is very simple with a dark background, scary aggressive guy to the side, and text on the side, all of which makes it look like a Times cover. There's some texture behind Trump's body, which appears to be like a picture background in photoshoot.
                                    • Lighting: The image is very dark, with what looks to be a spotlight on Trump. The words are written in white, except for "women" which especially pops out.
                                    • Dimension: It looks like a billboard sized image, but could be utilized for a lot of different purposes.
                                    • Location: It looks like it took place at a cover photoshoot for Times magazine.
                                    • Display: This image is very simple and straight to the point.
                                      Response:
This image is supposed to be kinda funny, except for when you realize that he managed to win the election. It requires you to have some sort of previous knowledge about Trump, his history with women, and the last presidential debate.

                                      • Subject Matter: The subject of this image is the woman on the right, and seeks to explain how Donald Trump, and his misogynistic comments, do not speak for the majority of Americans, especially women and minorities.
                                      • Aesthetic Qualities: This image falls more on the sublime side, but definitely does not aim to be beautiful. The lack of color and the expressionless face of the woman is less comforting and more sublime.
                                      • Gesture: The woman is standing expressionless. Her gesture shows that she is not comfortable, and may be feeling angry or upset.
                                      • Lighting: The whiteness of the picture makes the image appear very bright, and the darker tones of the text stand out to to provide contrast to the background.
                                      • Dimension: This image is proportionate. The woman and the text take up equal space.
                                      • Location: Since this image is paid for by a Super PAC and for the presidential campaign, the image may be located on social media, billboards, and may be a frozen image from a tv ad.
                                      • Display: This image has very little going on (one woman + one question) but manages to hit you hard because you realize that the president-elect literally represents you and wow that sucks.
                                      Response:
This image forced me to think about Donald Trump (ugh, ew) and all of the comments he made toward/about women in the election. It makes you sad because you realize that unfortunately, that guy is speaking on behalf of American women for the next four years, and will undoubtedly say things that humiliate women.
